True to form, rap’s Air Jordan made yet another triumphant return this year. After 2006’s wholly wack Kingdom Come LP, his American Gangster album was the gold standard for hip-hop releases this year. Jay returns to the dope game on its first single, “Blue Magic.” Produced by The Neptunes, the hook is crooned ever-so-eerily by a falsetto-ed Pharrell over deliberately spaced/spacey drum rolls and hollow organs. Ever the badass, HOV boasts of his life of crime, stating that Reagan made him a monster and that “fishscale in my veins like Pisces.” Despite his recent announcement to step down as Def Jam shot-caller, Jigga hasn’t been this powerful in his music since The Blueprint.
