Foss-fore-ess-ent

Phosphorescent is the band/stage name of some guy named Matthew Houck. His most recent album, Pride, is a cornucopia of deLICious alt.country type moaning and what can only be described as Brian Wilson choir vocals backing Houck as he croaks his way through simple but engrossing songs. He sounds a lot like Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy, various Drag City stuff) without being derivative, and he's got that same rootsy, backwoods creepiness -- the kind that always reminds me of John Voight's mouth coming THIS close to getting raped in Deliverance. Talk about a cocktease. ANYWAY, the album is amazing and one of the most underrated releases of 2007 by far, in spite of an 8/10 from Pitchfork. "Wolves" is certifiably incredible, and the whole thing simply flows from beginning to end. Love it, please.

Also, in case you
were curious to know what Will Oldham sounds like, here's one of the Houck-ier songs from Bonnie "Prince" Billy's best album, I See a Darkness:
