Best of the Best of...
Every year (well for the last 4 or 5) when Pitchfork releases their best 50 albums/100 singles, I always feel obligated to go through all the artists and try to discover/rediscover some I've never heard of. Why?- I'm not really sure, but probably because all my other friends/journalists/music critics/anybody who listens to similar music does. Obviously my bias is towards electronic music, but im all open ears. From this years countdown Ive heard some new artists I find particularly interesting-- Air France and Portishead (rediscovered in this case) for example. However, I never view Pitchfork as the "ultimate" source of music journalism I feel alot of music people do. I still like Rolling Stone and shitty electro blogs run by Australians. After reading their review of Aoki's awful mix album, I felt like instead of bashing Aoki's poor choice in music they choose to criticize his style and mannerisms when Djing (but hey I'd really like a swig of some grey goose every now and then, right?). As much good as Pitchfork does for indie rock and under-the-radar music, they seem to carry this elitist attitude in their way about doing it. So here are a couple of track I found indirectly through Pitchfork, whether it be a song from an album or a single from the top 100 list. This years list was significantly different than last years, more electro-ish list. A lot of the dance/electronic music reflects the disco-revival of this previous year (see "Blind" and alot of Aeroplane write ups). While, yes, these songs were good and catchy, but I'd rather see more "banger"-oriented tracks associated with poor dj'ing and Steve Aoki. Yeh, the music isnt flawless and the Bloody Beetroots tracks often sound like theyre skipping a beat, but its always upbeat and ideal for a energetic, party hungry college student such as myself. I'll listen to Fleet Foxes when im 37 and have a couple kids, you know?

In all their synth glory, Miami Horror released their EP earlier this week. Ive been waiting to get my hands on Summerfest '86 for awhile after originally hearing it on their myspace. Definitely worth picking this up on vinyl, this group is my favorite in this 80's sound revival.

Nas is Like....
I tend to go into these ruts after long and vigorous displays of being in college (see: The Rules of Attraction) when I spend hours reading Wikipedia articles. On my most recent Winge (Wiki + Binge = Winge), I ended up on “NaS (Rapper).” I spent the better part of my night immersing myself in all things Nasir Jones. No homo.
Born in Crown Heights and raised in Queensbridge, Nas’ hip-hop pedigree is pretty evident. From the upstart hustler/poet in Illmatic, to the awesomely indulgent opening scene of Belly, to “Ether,” to jumping ship Jay-Z’s toilet slave, to the upcoming “Nigger,” Nas has never wavered as one of hip hop’s all time premier lyricists. Here’s some stuff I felt summed up his career (thus far) pretty well.

RANDOM HOUSE tunes Ive been listening to lately
Much to my chagrin this post is more than solely house, we have a little 80's, disco, new-ish electro and more. With not as many little posts in the last week or so, I decided to just throw a bunch of random tracks that have been catching me ear lately. We have a little Cut Copy off their album In Ghost Colours, a nice Yelle remix that is kinda old but I havent really given it a listen until late, some Gary Numan, Lil Wayne, an old primitive Justice joint which I am a little skeptical about (via hypemachine), a mashup (dont usually post these with the recent mashup craze amongst non-alternative music listeners as well as shitty quality because of this newfound interest), and some more. Be sure to check all of these out as theyre really spanning across genres and you should be bound to find something you enjoy.

Romeo Erotic
A relatively newer group, Romeo Erotic has been throwing out some serious remixes to classic R&B tracks from the 80's and 90's. Putting a funky disco spin on many of these tracks could lead to only one possible thing...a disco resurgence perhaps? First found their stuff on the hipster trendy blog missingtoof, which was kinda surprising finding this type of music on there. But, if its good, who cares? Add onto their tracks a couple other classic disco tracks ive been listening to lately.

BMX: The Best Thing Since Vegemite
This Australian quartet has been getting some serious exposure on the blog-o-sphere. I have not stopped listening ever since I got my hands on these tracks. They are so new they do not even have a myspace page but hopefully there is a lot more coming from these guys (and a girl). Perfect summery pop/electro that can been pumped while cruising with the windows down, chillin' on the beach, or having a damp sweaty party. I cannot wait for more. The tracks are below from best to worst.

Primal Scream
I never heard of Primal Scream until looking through the Daft Punk wiki and seeing the album, Screamadelica as one of their inspirations. Going by the transitive property of electronic music, if a great artist(s) is inspired by another artist, that other artist must be pretty good, I picked up the album. Needless to say, its a very interesting cd. A couple tracks really caught my ear with the indie sounding chords as well as some nice vocals and catchy basslines.

Joy Division
I could only follow up the Talking Heads post with a monster Joy Division post. The epitome of depressing music, Joy Division started up a lot of post punk shit, blah blah blah. Heres the wiki entry to better summarize the group:
"Joy Division rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. According to music critic Jon Savage, the band "were not punk but were directly inspired by its energy."[2] Their self-released 1978 debut EP, An Ideal for Living, caught the attention of the Manchester television personality Tony Wilson. Joy Division's debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Wilson's independent record label Factory Records, and drew critical acclaim from the British press. Despite the band's growing success, vocalist Ian Curtis was beset with depression and personal difficulties, including a dissolving marriage and his diagnosis with epilepsy. Curtis found it increasingly difficult to perform at live concerts, and often had seizures during performances"
New Order was good but didnt have the edgy, almost grimey sound that Joy Division incorporated. So therefore JD > NO.

Proxy, D.I.M. the Presets, more electro blah blah blah
Ive always seen groups like the Presets and Cut Copy as hipster electro gold, and therefore have been a little hesitant to delve into groups like these and get their shit off missingtoof, redthreat, etc. However, I downloaded a track by the presets called my people, which is incredibly catchy. Something about the intonation of the vocalist going along with those blaring synths catches my ear.

My People
Are You the One
As for DIM and proxy these guys kill it. When I hear them i think immediately of killing the dance floors full of drugged out hipsters at any Williamsburg-esque venue. Just give a listen, theres not much else i can do to describe the intensity and craziness of these tracks.

Disco/Funk Revival- Gene Chandler, James Brown, and more...
Ive always thought of the funk and disco eras as some of my favorites. The spirits were always high and the basslines were always thumping uncontrollably. Disco is essentially the barest bones of the dance genre as a whole. Disco led to early chicago house which led to house today and many other electronic/dance genres which evolved out of early house (acid house, drum and bass later down the road, uk garage,...). I downloaded a ton of random disco stuff and kinda sifted through it to find some interesting tidbits and what not. First up we have gene chandler who was an absolute boss. Known as the "Duke of Earl", Chandler was known for his over the top outfits and great hearty vocals that should only come out of a black man who started out in a doo-wop group.
Gene Chandler
Get Down
Next up I had to add a little bit of James Brown. As much problems as hes had, his music is funk. James Brown is funk. Funk is James Brown. James Brown beats woman and makes funk.
James Brown
Get up off'a that thang nigga
For the rest of the tracks I wanted to put up, I couldnt really pull up much in terms of wiki and even for discogs. Ill just put these up and let you decide for yourselves what to think.
